Buttermilk Loaf Recipe

Ingredients: Makes one 675 g/ 1.5 lb loaf

450g/1 lb/4 cups plain (all-purpose) flour
5 ml/1 tsp cream of tartar
5 ml/1 tsp bicarbonate of soda (baking soda)
250 ml/8 fl oz/1 cup buttermilk

Method:

Mix together the flour, cream of tartar and bicarbonate of soda in a bowl and make a well in the centre. Stir in enough of the buttermilk to mix to a soft dough. Shape into a round and place on a greased baking (cookie) sheet. Bake in a preheated oven at 220°C/425°F/gas mark 7 for 20 minutes until well risen and golden brown.
